Vinnies works closely with communities to ensure that they are provided the support and assistance that serves the specific needs in the area.
Throughout Australia we have 650 Vinnies Shops and Centres, which are the public face of our organisation.
Vinnies Shops have also become a number one destination for affordable and pre-loved items.
Everything that customers buy or donate in Vinnies Shops inspires change and the funds stay in the local community.
Case study: Vinnies commitment to Coober Pedy
We are very proud of one of our Vinnies Centres in Coober Pedy, South Australia, which is situated about 850km north of Adelaide and has a population of less than 2,000 people. The town is most famous for its opal mines and the dug outs in which people live to escape the scorching temperatures which can exceed 47 degrees. It is no wonder then that the name "Coober Pedy" comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which means "white man's hole”
The Vinnies Centre at Coober Pedy was officially opened in May 2015.
Vinnies has had a presence in the town for more than 30 years. The original Vinnies shop was opened in
1991, following the receipt of a National Grant. The grant enabled the Society to buy a house from a Slovenian Opal Miner, which the local community quickly turned into a Vinnies shop.
The Vinnies Centre in Coober Pedy continues to fill a great and growing need in the local area. It also provides an additional retail option for shoppers. On the opening day in May 2015, the Centre looked absolutely fantastic - we were very proud to have a new shop in such a remarkable community.
Over the years many locals have assisted with the operation of the shop, which has proudly served the people of Coober Pedy. Even through difficult times the shop has survived and served. It is a testament to the resilient spirit of the people of this small town with a big heart.
