Vinnies volunteers help break through the barriers of loneliness and isolation that many living on the fringe of society suffer.

We do this by visiting people in their homes, offering emergency relief, and in certain states by operating soup vans.

Vinnies goes where the need is and no work of charity is foreign to us. By providing material assistance or a warm, nutritious meal, blankets, toiletries, snacks, hot beverages and most importantly, companionship, our volunteers help foster genuine communities of friends.

A case study:  Fred’s Van in Adelaide

Known by different names nationally from Fred’s Van in SA, the Sydney Night Patrol in NSW, to Loui’s Van in TAS - Vinnies’ various soup vans are a service for people who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness and marginalisation.

In South Australia alone Fred’s Van has at least 460 volunteers and provides approximately 500 meals a week.

Supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our community who are experiencing a range of issues such as homelessness, social isolation and unemployment, the soup vans are a vital community service for men, women and children forced to live rough.

People who visit a soup van are provided with a hot, nutritious meal, fruit, drinks, blankets, clothing and food vouchers, donated books, social connection and referrals to other community service and Government agencies.

Anyone is welcome to access this service. We especially encourage people in our community who are living roughly or in squalid or insecure accommodation to access the service. In addition, people experiencing marginalisation, social isolation and unemployment can access the service. People are under no obligation to pay for the meals or goods provided, but we do encourage people to stay and chat as a community.

Where can I find out more?

Vinnies offers many opportunities for volunteers who enjoy making a positive difference to the well-being of others.

Only a few hours a month are required to volunteer with our soup vans and other services. You can donate food and/or blankets, volunteer in a team helping to prepare and serve the food, or donate funds to provide meals.
