The Vincentian Way is being launched around Australia under the guidance of National President, Mark Gaetani and State and Territory Council Presidents. Pictured is the launch at the office of the Society NSW.

The Vincentian Way was written by a core group of representatives from across Australia and informed by a number of workshops and consultations with broader national networks and groups.

In our ever-evolving world, the heart of our mission remains constant: to walk with and serve those on the margins, inspired by the life and legacy of Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, and our Patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. The Vincentian Way Framework is a new guiding document, prepared for the Society’s National Council, to assist our state and territory Councils and future Society leaders to strengthen our identity, deepen formation and understanding, and support our enduring commitment to servant leadership.

A Compass for Formation and Mission

More than a set of values or aspirations, The Vincentian Way Framework is a practical and reflective tool designed to guide all leaders within our organisation—particularly Society Stewards and the leadership teams of related corporate entities—towards a deeper understanding of what it means to live and lead in the Vincentian tradition.

Rooted in Gospel values and the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, the Framework provides the Society in Australia with a consistent reference point for ongoing formation. Through engagement with this Framework, leaders are invited into a journey of personal reflection, communal discernment, and systemic response—echoing the heart of Vincentian spirituality, which calls us to see Christ in the poor and to be Christ for others.

Why It Matters

In today’s diverse and rapidly changing world, The Vincentian Way Framework offers a shared language—one that is inclusive, accessible, and faithful to our origins. It is intended to help all members of our organisation, regardless of background or belief, to connect with what it means to be part of a Lay Catholic organisation in a modern context.

“Whether in governance, frontline service, education, or advocacy, the Framework offers a lens through which we can reflect, act, and lead with integrity and compassion”

The Framework ensures that we remain deeply rooted in our Vincentian identity, while also expressing it in ways that resonate in contemporary society. It supports the Society in articulating its spirituality and mission in ways that are relevant, respectful, and engaging—bridging tradition and innovation and reminding each of us of the Vincentian charism that animates our service.

The shared language it fosters deepens understanding and unity, helping us to communicate our purpose and values clearly—to one another, to those we serve, and to the wider community. Whether in governance, frontline service, education, or advocacy, the Framework offers a lens through which we can reflect, act, and lead with integrity and compassion.

Supporting Stewards in Leadership

Society Stewards are entrusted with nurturing and advancing the mission, and The Vincentian Way Framework supports them in this sacred responsibility. It empowers leaders to grow in the Vincentian spirit, develop cultural and contextual awareness, and lead with strategic clarity—ensuring that their leadership remains anchored in our core values such as compassion, respect and empathy.

As we look ahead, we recognise that this Framework is not a static document, but a living guide—responsive to the signs of the times and open to the Spirit’s prompting. It reminds us that formation is not a one-time event, but a lifelong process of becoming more fully who we are called to be.

Core Elements of the Framework

At the heart of The Vincentian Way Framework are four interrelated components:

  • Domains: Key areas of leadership and mission in which formation and action are expressed—such as Vincentian Identity and Community, Vincentian Formation and Education, Vincentian Mission and Outreach, and Vincentian Leadership and Effective Stewardship.
  • Expectations: Clear and realistic standards of Vincentian leadership and service for Society Stewards and related entities.
  • Commitments: The shared promises we make to uphold our Vincentian identity and live out our mission with integrity.
  • Belong, Believe, Become: A formation model emerging from the 2023 Congress in Sydney that supports members on a journey of inclusion (Belong), faith and values development (Believe), and purpose-driven service and leadership (Become).

These core elements are grounded in the principles of Catholic Social Teaching which provide a moral and spiritual foundation—affirming human dignity, the common good, solidarity, subsidiarity, and a preferential option for the poor. Together, they offer a practical, reflective, and relational guide to becoming the Vincentian leaders our world needs today.

Extending the Footsteps

In living the Vincentian Way, we do not merely follow in the footsteps of Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, Rosalie Rendu, Saint Louise de Marillac, and Saint Vincent de Paul—we extend them.

May this Framework continue to inspire us to lead with courage and to serve with love, and in hope. R
