St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia welcomes the appointment of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Leo XIV.

On May 15, 1891, His Holiness’ nominal predecessor, Pope Leo XIII, Bishop of Rome from 1878 to 1903, issued the landmark encyclical Rerum Novarum, (The Condition of Labor) inaugurating a series of official documents, known as Catholic Social Teaching (CST), which apply religious and moral principles to contemporary social concerns.

The Society’s charity and advocacy work is inspired by these Catholic Social Teaching principles.

“In his address to the gathering at St Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV said, ‘We have to look together how to be a missionary Church, building bridges, dialogue, always open to receiving with open arms for everyone, like this square, open to all, to all who need our charity, our presence, dialogue, love’.”

- Pope Leo XIV

As the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference has observed, the election of Pope Leo XIV represents a momentous event in the life of the Catholic Church, the wider community of Christian believers and, in many respects, the whole world.
