“I love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains, Of ragged mountain ranges, Of droughts and flooding rains.”
By mid-2025, it seemed Australia had experienced all the conditions referenced in this well-known verse, and in late May it was the turn of the Society NSW to rally in support of farming and town communities along the state’s flood stricken mid-North Coast.
The Vinnies NSW Flood Appeal was launched to support people impacted by catastrophic flooding, with heights in some areas reported to be in the 1-in-500 year level.
From the Central Coast up to Coffs Harbour, the relentless rainfall had local communities reeling. People were isolated and trapped, others having lost their homes and livestock.
The Vinnies NSW Flood Appeal sought urgent financial donations to provide immediate assistance to impacted people, as well as longer-term recovery support.
‘This flooding is devastating and a further blow for communities already impacted by previous natural disasters,’ said Yolanda Saiz, St Vincent de Paul Society NSW CEO.
‘The St Vincent de Paul Society NSW is ready to support affected communities in their time of need. The most effective way to support communities impacted by flooding is through financial donations to the Vinnies NSW Flood Appeal. The damage caused by severe weather makes the transportation of goods challenging at this time and financial assistance enables us to respond to their individual needs,’ Ms Saiz added.
As flood waters receded, Vinnies NSW Members and volunteers attended recovery centres to distribute immediate assistance with grocery vouchers and financial relief.
Members also conducted mobile outreach through Vinnies Vans to affected communities unable to reach recovery centres in-person. This aid will include food, water, sleeping bags, sanitary and hygiene packs, along with emotional support.
Vinnies NSW homelessness hubs including the Matthew Talbot in Newcastle and Pete’s Place in Coffs Harbour provided shelter, food, clothing and other basic supplies to people experiencing homelessness in the region.
The funds raised through the Vinnies NSW Flood Appeal will enable Vinnies Members and services to offer support beyond the immediate aftermath of the floods, including financial assistance, referrals to specialist services and other wrap-around supports.
‘Natural disasters have long lasting impacts. The support provided through the Vinnies NSW Flood Appeal will enable us to respond now, as well as over the longer-term,’ said Peter Houweling, St Vincent de Paul Society NSW State President.
