Autumn 2026

The St Vincent de Paul Society has welcomed the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference’s new Social Justice Statement 2026, The Cost of Our Living: Economic and Social Justice for the Common Good, which addresses Australia’s worsening cost‑of‑living crisis. Released on 9 February, the statement warns of growing inequality and hardship as more Australians struggle to cover basics.

National President Mark Gaetani said the Bishops’ message reflects what the Society’s Members hear daily; that rising costs are pushing people who were just getting by into poverty.

The statement highlights structural inequalities such as low income supports, stagnant wages, and a lack of affordable housing, urging governments and communities to act with courage and compassion.

The Bishops encourage all Australians to respond through advocacy, volunteering and support.
