Greens Senator David Shoebridge from NSW (second from left) met with representatives of the St Vincent de Paul Society, Tom Gersbach (left), Megan Bingham and Tim McKenna, at Australian Parliament House on 30 January.

On Friday 30 January, representatives from the St Vincent de Paul Society met with Senator for NSW David Shoebridge (Greens) to discuss key issues emerging from our frontline work, particularly the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, the impacts of inadequate government support payments, and refugee policy, with a focus on people affected by Australia’s offshore processing arrangements in Manus Island and Papua New Guinea.

Drawing on the Society’s frontline experience, the discussion highlighted how rising living costs and low-income support are placing growing pressure on individuals, families and community services across NSW.

The Society appreciated the opportunity to share insights from our work with vulnerable communities, including the role of local Conferences and Vinnies services in providing practical support, dignity and connection for people doing it tough.

The Society looks forward to continuing this important conversation and contributing to policies that strengthen Australia’s social safety net.

Representatives from the Society included Jack Barlow, Megan Bingham, Tom Gersbach and Tim McKenna.
