What is a Member?
Members are everyday Queenslanders, just like you, who volunteer their time to help people in their local community with St Vincent de Paul Society.
They are compassionate individuals who enjoy volunteering in their Conference (a group of Members) and understand that true happiness is found through helping people in need.

What does helping as a Member look like?
We have two types of Members:
- Conference Members - Members who are actively involved, make decisions and attend meetings
- Associate Members - Members who are more flexibly involved, and help people as guided by Conference
All Members belong to a Conference (a local group of Members), and Conferences decide how best to address the needs of their local community together. This means that Membership looks different for every Conference, but what is universal is our Members' commitment to accompany those in need throughout their journey to get back on their feet.
The help we provide can be anything from home visits and a listening ear, to providing financial or food assistance, offering advice, and connecting people to relevant services.
If you're unsure, why not become an Associate Member and see if Membership is for you?

"I help my local community once every week on a Thursday. For me, it was important to find time in my busy schedule to give back; to remind myself what is important, and give hope to people who have fallen on hard times.
In our weekly meeting we discuss all of our support requests to ensure we are ready for calls and visits to those we are supporting. Our Conference provides a variety of help; we call and visit those who have requested support, and most often we provide financial or food assistance. You cannot imagine how much relief even the smallest amount of support provides to those in need.
The work we do can be tough, but it is rewarding. It reminds me to be grateful for what I have, and really shows you how easily any of us could fall into homelessness."
