National Homelessness Week from 4 – 10 August, is a time to reflect on the critical importance of securing people and families a place to call home.
Homelessness in Australia is at its worst levels in living memory. We now have one of the highest rates in the developed world.
In Queensland alone, there are more than 22,300 people directly experiencing homelessness. In the last 12 months, there has been a 14 per cent growth in our social housing waiting list, which has now exceeded the 50,000 mark.
Our Society has been working tirelessly to provide support, care and dignity for those experiencing or facing homelessness across the state.
Throughout our crisis accomodation options, shelters and hostels, Vinnies Housing properties, support centres and Programs, as well as our ambitious goal to build 500 affordable and community homes across Queensland, make a difference in providing support, care and dignity for those in need.
We know that 80 per cent of people avoid homelessness when early support is provided. This is why as a Society, we will continue to advocate for a Housing First approach to policy, programs and funding.
Housing First recognises that housing is a fundamental human right and that stable housing is the foundation for addressing other issues, such as health and employment.
By providing housing to people experiencing homelessness without requiring them to meet certain preconditions and have control over their housing they are more likely to remain housed and improve their lives. It also reduces public costs by decreasing the need for emergency services, hospital stays, and interactions with the criminal justice system.
Putting a safe and secure roof over head gives each person dignity and hope and provides the foundation for a better future.
The Queensland Society of St Vincent de Paul calls on government, community organisations as well as business and industry, to continue to work collectively to take a Housing First approach to enable those experiencing or at risk of homelessness have a place to call home.
