Bernie Waugh has officially hung up her volunteer hat after 19 years with Vinnies WA.
The oft-heard saying “a woman’s work is never done” is something Bernadette ‘Bernie’ Waugh knows all too well.
After retiring from her successful career as a librarian in 2007, the 84-year-old turned her attention to volunteering at the St Vincent de Paul Society WA (aka Vinnies WA) where she would dedicate nearly two decades of service to helping others.
From lending a compassionate ear as a volunteer call-taker in the Emergency Relief Call Centre to sorting, packing and delivering hampers for the annual Vinnies Christmas Appeal drive in her local community, Bernie consistently went above and beyond to help support people who are experiencing hardship.
For Bernie, volunteering felt like a natural next step.
“When you retire, you’re looking for something to do to use your skills,” Bernie said.
“If you’re brought up with Christian values, you believe in helping people.
“Joining Vinnies gave me that opportunity to volunteer and help people at the same time, which felt good.”
