Kylan Beech believes the St Vincent de Paul Society is a natural fit for young people like him. Photo: St Vincent de Paul Society SA
Kylan Beech is a man who understands the value of time. This young South Australian manages corporate car sales at Maughan Thiem in Adelaide, runs his own telecommunications business, presides over his local cricket club, umpires SANFL matches and produces and presents the Saturday sports show on Adelaide’s LifeFM. Yet he still makes room for the St Vincent de Paul Society, serving as a Lockleys Conference Member and, more recently, Regional President for Adelaide’s Western Region.
Although Kylan is a person of faith, what drew him in wasn’t religion, but the breadth of the Society’s services. “The best part about Vinnies is that we are there before people get to the streets, we’re there when they are on the streets, and we’re there after they have been on the streets,” he says.
Kylan learned young not to judge a book by its cover. His first assistance visit as a teenager took him just three streets from his family home. Through home visits he now meets former professionals and families upended by injury or relationship breakdown; proof, he says, that hard times can happen to anyone.
He’s convinced Vinnies is a natural fit for young people, with a niche for almost every interest.
