The thrifting trend is set to take hold this Christmas with more than three quarters (76 per cent) of Australians revealing they are open to buying pre-loved festive gifts this year, according to a national survey commissioned by the St Vincent de Paul Society.

The Vinnies Christmas survey – which gauged the responses of 1000 Australians – also revealed that nearly 9 in 10 (89 per cent) respondents would happily accept a pre-loved gift, while 87 per cent admit they would be more inclined to buy a Christmas gift from an op-shop if they knew their purchase directly supported families doing it tough.

The survey also found:

  • 89 per cent would be open to receiving a pre-loved gift from an op-shop
  • 76 per cent think Christmas shopping stressful
  • 40 per cent believe the cost of gifts is the biggest stressor, followed by crowded shopping centres (31 per cent)
  • More than 1 in 2 (56.5 per cent) admit they’ve spent more than they could afford on Christmas gifts
  • 74 per cent feel guilty or uncomfortable about the environmental impact of Christmas shopping (overconsumption, packaging, waste).

Vinnies WA Acting CEO Carl Prowse said it is encouraging to hear that more people are open to buying second-hand gifts from op shops this Christmas.

“Vinnies has 53 Retail Shops across WA, so why not take the opportunity to buy a unique, one-of-a-kind gift for your loved one at an affordable price which gives back to people in need,” Mr Prowse said.

“There is a treasure trove of gifts waiting to be found across our shops which are bound to bring someone joy this Christmas.”

For those who want to take their gift giving to the next level, Vinnies WA has launched its Do-Good Gift appeal, which gives West Australians the opportunity to make a difference with their dollar by purchasing a gift that makes a difference for people who are doing it tough this festive season.

“Gifts start from $5 to purchase food items for a family, $25 to buy a toy for a child to unwrap this Christmas, through to $250 which will bring festive joy to a family by providing food on the table and gifts under the tree,” Mr Prowse said.

“Simply head to the Vinnies WA website, choose a gift and write a message to your loved one who will then receive an e-card telling them how their gift is giving back to vulnerable West Australians supported by Vinnies WA.”
