Vinnies WA has relocated its Joondalup Vinnies Support Centre to a larger premises amid surging
demand for emergency relief and financial counselling assistance.
Staffed by volunteers, the new centre at 5/209 Winton Road opened on Thursday, offering emergency relief for food, clothing, petrol and utility bills, as well as Vinnies WA’s professional financial counselling as well as referrals, advocacy and community support.
Vinnies WA Service Executive Manager of Community Engagement Services Andrew York said the Joondalup-Wanneroo region was among the fastest growing in Western Australia, and there had been a considerable increase in the number of local people experiencing homelessness.
Similarly, demand for essential items such as food, clothing, fuel and utility bills has been unprecedented during the current cost-of-living and housing crises.
“Western Australians are facing mounting socio-economic pressures driven by rising living costs, housing insecurity and financial stress, and vulnerable groups in our community are disproportionately impacted,” Mr York said.
“Demand for emergency relief services from Vinnies WA is at an all-time high, and that increase is projected to grow further with another 47% increase forecast in household assistance across Western Australia by 2030.”
The new site has more parking, better accessibility, dedicated delivery access and more storage, effectively helping a greater number of people in the community.
Vinnies WA Northern Centre President Allan Rose said the Joondalup support centre had outgrown its previous Reid Promenade location.
“The Joondalup Vinnies Support Centre has seen unprecedented demand from people experiencing homelessness in the area, with a 275% increase in presentations from people experiencing homelessness in the past four years,” Mr Rose said.
“If you are struggling to make ends meet, it’s OK to ask for help. Our friendly volunteers are available to lend a listening ear and offer practical support.”
In 2024/2025, the Joondalup Vinnies Support Centre provided more than 2500 food hampers and vouchers to the community in need, and supported almost 700 families.
The first northern centre was established in 2021 in response to increased demand for emergency relief, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Vinnies WA home visitation model.
Other Vinnies Support Centres operate in Midland, Mandurah, Rockingham, Kwinana and in the South-West.
The new Joondalup Vinnies Support Centre is located at 5/209 Winton Road, and is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am-1pm.
