Vinnies joins sector fight to end youth homelessness
Vinnies WA has joined forces with Mission Australia, Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia, Shelter WA, WA Council of Social Services, Western Australian Alliance to End Homelessness and Indigo Junction to address the worrying trend of child and youth homelessness in WA.
The collective call to action from organisations in the sector urges the WA Government to do more to address child and youth homelessness amid worrying statistics that reveal more than 700 unaccompanied children and young people experience homelessness in WA on any given day.
Figures also revealed that there are no affordable rentals available in WA for a single person over the age of 18 who is receiving Youth Allowance payments, while nationally, statistics show that young people aged between 18 and 24 make up a third of those who are working and experiencing homelessness.
During a joint press conference in Midland on Monday, November 17, the sector came together to call for more investment in housing models and prevention initiatives.
Among the key priorities outlined in the joint pre-budget submission include expanding housing options for young people and strengthening both prevention and early intervention initiatives such as place-based youth service hubs.
While Vinnies WA is grateful to receive extensive media coverage on this important topic this week, there is still a lot more work to do be done to make a real difference in this space, particularly in the lead up to the 2026-27 State Budget in May next year.
