Caring ‘Mini Vinnies’ from Sacred Heart Primary School in Thornlie have helped their local community combat the chilly weather with a blanket drive this winter.

The school’s Mini Vinnies group, which was set up last year, received donations of 25 blankets, which were passed on to the Thornlie St Vincent de Paul Society Conference to be distributed to those in need.

Principal Steve Gibbs said he was extremely proud of the students’ efforts, led by Assistant Principal Darlene Min, which raised awareness about winter hardship and the importance of helping others.

“The Mini Vinnies team discussed the needs of people heading into winter and decided to collect blankets. The team made posters to place around the school and in the newsletter and also spoke to the children in all of the classes,” Mr Gibbs said.

“Mrs Min is extremely proud of the work the Mini Vinnies team has done and the way they support the Thornlie Conference. They also help coordinate our annual Christmas Hamper appeal.”

Mini Vinnies empowers primary school students to become advocates in their communities by putting Vinnies values into action, raising awareness of social justice issues and organising ways to help people who need it most.
