When single mother Jane was struggling to put food on the table to feed her four young children, she began to lose hope.

“I was desperate for help. When I first reached out, I was pregnant with my youngest and I was juggling being a single mum to three young kids,” Jane recalled.

“And trying to keep everything together, it was really tough.”

It wasn’t until she discovered a local community kitchen, which is hosted every Wednesday evening by Vinnies WA’s dedicated team of Members and Volunteers that she began to feel hopeful.

“At first I was really ashamed to seek help,” Jane said. “But after I went for the first time, and saw how friendly and welcoming everyone was, I realised that there is absolutely no shame asking for help.”

Three years on, Jane and her family are regulars at Vinnies’ weekly community kitchen.

She said the simple act of being provided a hearty meal once a week for her family has made a world of difference.

“I am incredibly grateful for this community kitchen run by Vinnies, and the volunteers who run this place are amazing,” she said.

“We now look forward to our weekly visits – and it’s one less night a week that I have to stress about putting food on the table for my kids.

“It’s more than just a meal, we have made friends here and we feel like we are part of a community.”
