For nearly three decades, Winston Rennick has been a quiet force of compassion and support as both a financial counsellor and Emergency Relief volunteer with the St Vincent de Paul Society of WA.
During that time, Winston has dedicated countless hours helping West Australians in need facing financial hardship, including those experiencing rent or mortgage stress, utility disconnections, food insecurity and crisis.
Known for his calm, respectful and non-judgemental approach, Winston has long been praised for his approach which leaves every client feeling heard, valued and supported.
But Winston’s efforts have not gone unnoticed – on Friday, December 5, he was named the recipient of Alcoa’s Peel Volunteer of the Year Award.
For Winston, it was a huge honour to be recognised for his contribution as a Vinnies volunteer.
“I am truly honoured and humbled to be considered for this recognition among so many dedicated and inspiring individuals within our community,” Mr Rennick said.
“Volunteering has always been a meaningful part of my life, allowing me to give back, connect with others and help make a positive difference.
“Being nominated for this award is a privilege, and it motivates me to continue contributing to the causes and people that matter most to me.”
Vinnies WA Manager of Financial Counselling Suzanne Long, who nominated Winston for the award, said that Winston’s impact reaches far beyond just individual support.
“He regularly works with local agencies and services to ensure people receive coordinated care, while also mentoring new volunteers and financial counsellors to strengthen Vinnies WA’s response across the sector,” Ms Long said.
Vinnies WA Executive Manager of Community Engagement Services Andrew York said
“Winston has shown time and time again that he lives and breathes the St Vincent de Paul Society’s mission to build a more a just and compassionate society,” Mr York said.
“His selfless, compassionate and empathetic nature also exemplifies what it means to be a Vinnies volunteer, and as an organisation, we are very lucky to have Winston among our dedicated volunteers.”
