For 51-year-old fly-in, fly-out worker Jason, helping people has always been part of his nature.

“For many years, I have loved helping people in a variety of ways,” he said.

“In my previous job, I would help people of all walks of life and races to upskill and improve their lives.

“I would freely help those who struggle to find work, by creating professional resumes, cover letters and interview coaching.”

But a recent injury he sustained while on the job forced Jason to take a break.

As part of his recovery program, Jason was offered a position as a volunteer call-taker in the Emergency Relief Service Centre at Vinnies WA’s head office in Canning Vale.

“I have found a perfect way to continue to help vulnerable people through volunteering at Vinnies,” he said

“At the call centre, I have had the opportunity to help people who are at their lowest and close to breaking point.”

“There have been a few calls I have taken that have struck me deeply, but I was able to offer the appropriate help that made a huge difference to that caller's life.

Jason said he loved being able to help people and is proud to be part of an “amazing team of kind and caring people”.

“Normally I have helped people in my own circle or friends of friends, but through Vinnies, I have learned to help anyone in need, in a safe and efficient way,” he said.

Based on the experience he has had so far, Jason encourages others to consider giving back to others by volunteering for organisations like Vinnies.

“You will have a great and supportive team around you who are guided by Christian ethos but are open, diverse and non-judgmental and seek to help those in our broader community who are in need,” he said.
