Vincentians, staff members and distinguished guests came together at St Joseph’s Parish in Subiaco last month for the St Vincent de Paul Society WA’s Oration event to mark its 160th anniversary.

Former Supreme Court Judge, the Hon Justice Neville Owen AO, orated the event held on Thursday 25 September, where he gave a moving reflection of the WA Society’s rich history over the past 160 years.

Among distinguished guests from politics, the legal fraternity, faith organisations, community and not-for-profit groups, there were eight Vincentians who had each given over 40 years’ service to the St Vincent de Paul Society.

In his address, Justice Owen acknowledged the widespread impact the WA Society has had on countless lives across Western Australia, describing how ‘Vincentians’ represent social justice in action.

“Part of the role at the Society is advocacy – speaking up for those without a voice,” Justice Owen said during his oration. “Vincentians have been doing that here in Western Australia for 160 years.”

St Vincent de Paul Society WA State President Danny Cloghan thanked Justice Owen for his thoughtful reflection.

“It is a privilege to bring people together from across the Society to celebrate this milestone anniversary,” Mr Cloghan said.

“We are grateful to all our guests, Vincentians and staff who attended our event, and we feel honoured to have had such a moving oration by Justice Owen which captures the heart and soul of the WA Society.”

Vinnies WA CEO Ann Curran said Justice Owen offered a wonderful reflection of the Society from its early beginnings in 1865 to the contemporary organisation it is today.

“It was a wonderful event that really shines a light on our rich history, and makes me proud to be part of an organisation that continues to provide hope, help and humanity to vulnerable West Australians,” she said.
