Today the St Vincent de Paul Society WA, also known as Vinnies WA, officially releases a commemorative short film that pays homage to its rich 160-year history of serving the Western Australian community.

Narrated by Perth media personality Mark Gibson, the moving 10-minute documentary-style film reflects on the Society’s impact in WA over the past 160 years, from its early beginnings in 1865 through to its modern-day operations which has seen it expand on its Retail Shops and Emergency Relief program to include essential wraparound supports addressing homelessness, mental health, transitional housing and youth engagement.

Through showcasing the Society’s enduring mission of providing hope, dignity and support to those facing hardship, the film honours the legacy of its members, volunteers and staff who have stood alongside West Australians in their greatest times of need.

Vinnies WA CEO Ann Curran said marking this milestone reiterates and reflects the Society’s deep gratitude for those who came before us and to those who continue to serve the WA community today.

“For 160 years, Vinnies WA has walked with West Australians in times of need,” Ms Curran said.

“This film is not only a tribute to our past, but also a call to action as we look to the future and renew our commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty.”

The film also showcases how the Society has provided hope, help and humanity to vulnerable West Australians since 1865, shedding light on the direct impact the it has had on those experiencing hardship who have been touched by the support they have received.

St Vincent de Paul Society WA State President Danny Cloghan added that celebrating the anniversary is a proud achievement for its members, volunteers and staff, and pays homage to the Society’s tradition of caring, compassion and giving in the WA community over the last 160 years.

“Reflecting on our history to what the Society is today, we know that the demand for support from vulnerable West Australians is just as important today as it was 160 years ago,” Mr Cloghan said.

“Without our ongoing mission to provide care, compassion and giving through our services like our Emergency Relief program, many children and families would go without.

“The Society’s legacy is built on compassion, faith, and solidarity with people experiencing hardship, and this commemorative film reflects the impact of our work in local communities and the hope we continue to offer across WA.

“We are deeply grateful for the WA community’s continued support for the important work we do.”
