Policy and Position Statement for People Seeking Asylum

In November 2015, the St Vincent de Paul Society National Council of Australia approved the following policy on people seeking asylum.

Vinnies recognises that asylum seekers are amongst the most marginalised people in our nation. Australian policies on their treatment do not only affect the asylum seekers but also serve to shape our own national character.

Our treatment of refugees within Australia should be just, compassionate and respectful of human dignity.  We support the adoption and maintenance of any international treaties that offer safety to people feeling in genuine fear of danger, irrespective of their mode of arrival or at which part of Australian territory they arrived.
