Income Support, Poverty and Debt

The Society calls for:

• poverty to be defined and monitored, with regularly published data  
• child poverty to be halved by 2030
• a National Children’s Act, a Cabinet Minister for Children and a Ministerial Council for Child Wellbeing
• an increase to the base rate of working age payments
• income support payments to be indexed biannually in line with wage growth or CPI 
• an increase to the earnings threshold of income support payments by $150 a fortnight
• increased medical bulk billing services
• an increase to the base rate of family and domestic violence payments
• a review of the regulation of Buy Now Pay Later products  
• a fairer assessment process for the Disability Support Pension
• a fairer taxation system that helps to lift people out of poverty
