Tariff-Tracking Map

This map shows key data collected and analysed by the Vinnies' Tariff-Tracking Project. The map allows users to examine electricity, gas and solar bills by postcode, explore changes to bills over time as well as potential savings that could be made by switching retailer.

  • Average annual electricity bill for each network area
  • Electricity offers available as of July in each year
  • Bill calculations based on household using 6,000 kWh per annum (single rate)
  • Bills do not include any additional discounts
  • Bills include GST
  • Bill calculations are based on average market offer except for the following years when they are based on regulated/standing offers: VIC (2009), NSW (2009,2010), SA (2009-2011), QLD (2009-2011), ACT (2009-2012), TAS (2009-current), NT (2009-current), WA (2009-current)
  • Average annual gas bill for each pricing zone
  • Gas offers available as of July in each year
  • Bill calculations based on household using 30,000 Mj per annum
  • Bills do not include any additional discounts
  • Bills include GST
  • Bill calculations are based on average market offer except for the following years when they are based on regulated/standing offers: VIC (2009), NSW (2009,2010), SA (2009-2011)
  • Gas has not been available since 2009 in all gas zones. There is also no gas data included for NT and WA.
  • Average annual electricity bill for solar customers in each network area
  • Electricity offers available as of July in each year
  • Bill calculations based on household using 6,000 kWh per annum (single rate)
  • Bill calculations based on homes with a 3 kW system installed and located in residential areas (some overshadowing)
  • Bills do not include any additional discounts
  • Bills include any solar feed in rates offered
  • Bills include GST
  • Solar bill calculations not available for WA (Horizon and Western Power), NT and Ergon network (Qld)

Note that many postcodes have more than one electricity network and/or gas distributor (so called “shared postcodes”) and that this map only contains one network and/or gas distributor for each postcode. If a postcode that you are interested in shows a different electricity network or gas distributor, examine the neighbouring postcodes to find the relevant network and/or distributor.

The tariffs and bill calculations presented in this map should be used as a general guide only and should not be relied upon. The workbooks are not an appropriate substitute for obtaining an offer from an energy retailer. The information presented in this map is not provided as financial advice.
