Other Responses

In addition to responses from major parties, the Society received written replies from a number of independent candidates and senators. We thank these candidates for engaging with our Justice and Compassion platform and taking the time to respond to the Society’s priority areas.

Dr Verity Cooper (Independent – Sturt)

Dr Cooper submitted a written response addressing each of the Society’s four priorities. Her response includes commentary on:

  • The adequacy of current income support payments and healthcare access
  • The need for increased public and social housing, as well as rental reforms
  • Support for truth-telling, raising the age of criminal responsibility, and community-led First Nations initiatives
  • Criticism of offshore detention policies and support for compliance with international refugee protections

Senator David Pocock (Independent – ACT)

Senator Pocock’s office provided links to his public policy positions corresponding to each of the Society’s four advocacy areas:

  • Supporting a Safety Net for All Australians: Includes commitments related to income support, healthcare, and employment services
  • Housing Security Across the Country: Advocates for increased affordable housing and rental reform
  • Meeting the Needs of First Nations Peoples: Supports truth-telling, raising the age of criminal responsibility, and community-led approaches
  • Rising to the Refugee Challenge: Outlines a position in favour of ending offshore processing and improving refugee protection pathways
