Yet, the road ahead was steep. Without secure housing, her parole eligibility was threatened, and her mental health—fragile from complex PTSD and panic disorder—remained a daily struggle. As a trans woman, Tahnee faced additional layers of vulnerability that made reintegration into the community even more precarious.
A lifeline arrived through a priority referral to Pride in Place, a VincentCare initiative offering safe, inclusive support for LGBTQIA+ individuals experiencing homelessness. On her release, Tahnee moved directly into an identity-affirming, integrated bed at Ozanam House. There, she found not just shelter, but a community. With access to healthcare, legal aid, creative programs, and peer support pathways, Tahnee began to rebuild.
She enrolled in a Diploma of Community Services, completed peer support training and started applying for jobs. Each step forward was a testament to her strength and the power of trauma-informed, affirming care.
Tahnee’s story is one of transformation—from surviving to thriving. Her journey shows how compassion, timing and inclusive support can turn high-risk transitions into empowered futures.
