Gaining practical experience
Remy’s story is one of creativity, growth, and opportunity. As a fashion student, she was looking for a way to gain practical experience alongside her university studies. Finding work experience in the fashion industry can often be difficult for students, which is what led Remy to begin volunteering at the Vinnies Hawthorn store in February 2025.
Since joining Vinnies, Remy has been able to develop hands-on skills that directly connect to her studies, including styling mannequins, creating visual displays, and learning more about presentation and fashion coordination in a real retail environment. One of her favourite parts of volunteering has been the opportunity to express her creativity through styling. When speaking about one of the mannequins she styled, Remy explained that the inspiration “just kind of popped” into her mind naturally, reflecting the confidence and creative freedom she has gained through the experience.
For Remy, volunteering has been more than just work experience. It has also helped her build valuable connections and friendships while developing skills she believes will support her future career in the fashion industry. Through her time at Vinnies, she has been able to apply what she learns at university in a practical setting, helping bridge the gap between study and industry experience.
Remy encourages anyone considering volunteering to give it a go, saying you never know what opportunities may come from the experience. Along the way, she has gained new friendships, industry connections, and practical skills that she may not have otherwise had the chance to learn.
During National Volunteer Week, Remy represents thousands of Vinnies volunteers who quietly transform lives simply by showing up.
