VincentCare Community Housing (VCCH), a subsidiary of St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria, in partnership with the Commonwealth Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund Facility (HAFFF), has broken ground on a new project in the heart of Melbourne’s west that will deliver 83 new safe, secure and affordable homes for Victorians in need.
Today, Wednesday 24 September, the Assistant Treasurer and Member for Fraser Daniel Mulino and Minister for Housing Clare O'Neil visited the site for a ceremonial sod turning in this significant project for Victoria.
Tom Quinn, Chair, Vincent Care Community Housing said, “This project highlights the power of collaboration between the federal government, the community housing sector and the Catholic Development Fund to drive lasting change in the fight against homelessness.”
“Victoria is facing a housing crisis, and these 83 new homes will contribute to reducing homelessness in our state. VincentCare Community Housing, with our partners, is delivering real, practical action to address the crisis. We’re providing high quality, affordable homes to instil dignity and security to Victorians most in need of housing. By providing safe, stable housing, we empower those in need to rebuild their lives and create a brighter future,” Mr Quinn said.
The project follows VCCH and St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria’s successful bid to secure funding through the HAFFF to deliver essential social and affordable housing in Melbourne, which was made possible through a collaborative partnership with Housing Australia and the Catholic Development Fund.
This project is part of 279 successful projects from Housing Australia’s round 1 and 2 funding that will see 18,650 social and affordable homes built across Australia, including funding to support 9,284 social and 9,366 affordable homes across Australia, funded by the HAFFF and National Housing Accord Facility (NHAF)11.
Dr Jennifer Fitzgerald AM, Group CEO St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria said, “Everyone deserves a place to call home. We believe stable and affordable housing is the key to a brighter future for generations to come and this development is putting that belief into action, it demonstrates St. Vincent de Paul Society, Victoria’s commitment to being part of the solution to homelessness in Victoria.
“These apartments will be more than just homes and for those who live in them, the impact will be life changing; they are the foundation of thriving, connected communities, offering access to vital services, infrastructure, and employment opportunities,” Dr. Fitzgerald said. St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria, along with its subsidiaries VincentCare Victoria and VincentCare Community Housing, provide integrated support, outreach, and housing solutions for those most in need. Steadfast in its commitment to serving the Victorian community, the Group upholds the values of care, compassion, dignity, and respect across all its operations. The Maribyrnong project is expected to be completed by early 2027.
This federally-funded project follows VincentCare Victoria and St Vincent de Paul Victoria’s successful application for funding from the Victorian Government Big Housing Build project, which has seen the organisation deliver nine new townhouses in Wollert/Epping, 92 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments in Footscray and 84 apartments, including 30 current residents, in Kennington/Bendigo, to be completed by late 2027.
