Gift Good this Christmas

New research from Vinnies Victoria reveals 9 in 10 Aussies are open to receiving a pre-loved gift this Christmas

Australians are gift-wrapping up a new kind of Christmas this year, with new research revealing three in four (76%) are open to buying op-shop gifts this festive season and nearly nine in ten (89%) open to receiving a pre-loved pressie.

New independent research from Vinnies Victoria reveals a strong shift towards more conscious gifting with 87% more likely to shop pre-loved this Christmas, knowing that op-shop purchases help fund essentials like food, shelter, and family support.

Vinnies is inviting people across Victoria to rethink the way they gift this holiday season, offering curated pre-loved collections at stores statewide, including a special flagship Gift Good pop-up at the Fitzroy store from November 10.

Neil Harvey, General Manager, Retail at Vinnies Victoria said, “The rise of conscious gifting points to a new mindset, consumers are actively seeking ways to make their giving simpler, kinder and more sustainable.”

“The festive season can take a real toll on our wallets, wellbeing, and the environment. From Black Friday to Christmas, the pressure to spend and the waste that follows can be overwhelming. But there is a better way to shop.”

“Pre-loved gifts offer three in one; it’s a gift for your wallet, a gift for your loved one, and a gift for the planet and community.”

“It’s a way to save money, find something thoughtful, and support vital community services at the same time – and more Aussies are jumping on this shopping train. Even our tags tell a story, reminding our shoppers that every pre-loved purchase is three gifts in one." continued Mr Harvey.

The research also revealed, concerningly, that 57% of Aussies admit they’ve spent more than they could afford on gifts. As cost-of-living pressures continue op-shop gifting also helps relieve the increased stress of spending pressures for many Australians at Christmas, with 40% saying the top reason to op-shop is saving money.

The research highlights how the pressures of traditional gift-giving weigh on many Australians:

  • 74% feel guilty about the environmental impact
  • 76% find Christmas shopping stressful
  • 67% receive at least one unwanted or unused gift each year

From 10 November to 24 December, Vinnies is helping Australians Gift Good this festive season with exclusive savings and rewards. Shoppers can pick up a Christmas Vault Card at their local Vinnies store and be rewarded for gifting thoughtfully, shopping sustainably, and spreading extra joy. Spend $40 in-store and unlock $54 worth of credit for your next Vinnies shop, a simple way to save more, give back, and uncover pre-loved treasures.

Vinnies Victoria operates over 120+ shops across Victoria, generating a retail turnover of more than $60 million. The network continues to grow, with 12 new stores opened in the past 12 months, including four PopUP by Vinnies locations. Through their purchases, Vinnies shoppers have helped fund $9.5 million food vouchers, 800,000 meals, and $6.4 million in cost-of-living support – a remarkable contribution made possible by thousands of dedicated volunteers.
