Christmas Appeal re-launches with helping hands at St Finn Barr’s
The St Vincent de Paul Society of Tasmania has re-launched its 2025 Christmas Appeal at St Finn Barr’s Catholic Primary School in Launceston, where students helped pack Vinnies Red Bags filled with essential items for Tasmanians experiencing hardship.
The hands-on activity is part of the school’s commitment to social justice and service, giving the students the opportunity to learn firsthand about the growing needs in their community and the difference their generosity can have during the most challenging time of the year.
State President Corey McGrath said the ongoing increase in requests for assistance demonstrated the importance of the appeal, along with the support from schools like St Finn Barr’s.
“For most of us Christmas is a time of joy and connection, but for far too many Tasmanians it brings stress, pressure and financial strain,” he said.
“Every week our Members and volunteers meet parents who are choosing between paying rent and buying presents for their children, or between putting fuel in the car and food on the table.
“By donating to the Vinnies Christmas Appeal, you are directly supporting Tasmanians with essentials like food, urgent utility or medical bills and immediate emergency relief.”
Over the past twelve months, the Society has assisted 3,529 families and 19,182 individuals through Emergency Relief programs, with roughly one in ten clients experiencing homelessness.
St Finn Barr’s Catholic Primary School Principal Damien Taylor said taking part in the appeal re-launch was a meaningful way for students to live out their values.
“At St Finn Barr's we encourage our students to show compassion, empathy, reconciliation and service to others,” he said.
“Supporting the Vinnies Christmas Food drive gives our students a real opportunity to put those values into action.
“Their donations can make a significant difference for people who may be struggling at this time of the year.”
This year, Vinnies is aiming to raise $250,000 for families and individuals facing hardship.
All funds raised will stay in Tasmania, ensuring local support reaches local people in need.
