Vinnies Kadina re-opens, joins new Maitland shop

Media Release
01/06/2023

After closing its doors in 2020 due to an issue with the building’s roof structure, Vinnies Kadina is set to re-open at 7 Dodswell Terrace on Tuesday 6 June.

The building, which is considered a State Heritage Place, is home to the Vinnies retail shop as well as the St Vincent de Paul Society Kadina/Wallaroo/Moonta conference, which comprises local volunteers supporting people in need in the local area. The conference has continued to operate while the shop has been undergoing building works.

The works took longer than anticipated due to the age of the building and constraints of its State Heritage Place status, as well as a scarcity of tradespeople post-Covid. The required works were broadened to extensively update the amenity with new flooring, ceilings, electricals, perimeter paths, and access ramps.

While the building retains the spirit of history on the outside, new fixtures and fittings have modernised the interior which houses an extensive selection of quality clothing, shoes, accessories and bric-a-brac. Proceeds from the sale of these items supports the assistance service provided by the St Vincent de Paul Society conference.

Vinnies has a strong presence on the Yorke Peninsula, with a shop and conference also operating in Maitland from new premises at 12 Robert Street.

Sharon Nelson, who was recently appointed to manage the Kadina and Maitland shops, is new to the area and can’t wait to welcome customers to the Kadina shop when it re-opens.

‘It is a very exciting time to be involved with Vinnies on the Yorke Peninsula, with a new shop in Maitland and a new-look shop in Kadina. It’s been a great start at Maitland, and I am really enjoying getting to know the volunteers and customers there, and learning what makes the community tick.

‘Likewise, I know people have been eagerly waiting for the Kadina shop to re-open and I think they will be very pleasantly surprised when they walk through the doors for the first time. I have seen the ‘before’ photos, and I can safely say that the upgrades will make the shopping experience – and the experience for volunteers - a lot more enjoyable.

‘Volunteers at Kadina and the new Maitland shop have been working tirelessly to get the shops up and running and play a significant role in the operation of the shops on a day-to-day basis.

‘We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to Kadina on June 6, and look forward to seeing more locals and tourists at the Maitland shop too’.

New volunteers are welcome at both shop locations – enquiries can be made by dropping into the shops, calling 8112 8735 or emailing volunteering@svdpsa.org.au
