Meet Michael Ryan

OAM for Ballarat Regional President, Michael Ryan

Michael enjoys giving back so it's no surprise he was nominated and received an OAM for his community work.

Congratulations to Ballarat Regional President, Michael Ryan, from Ballan who was recently awarded an Order of Australia Medal.

Michael has served his local community for many years through a number of organisations, including football clubs, cricket clubs and the parishes of Horsham and Gordon as well as being involved in various Federation University committees.

For seven year, Michael was a Horsham councillor, including two years as mayor, and is currently the Ballan & District Chamber of Commerce President.

"I first got involved with the St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria (Vinnies) in Ballan when COVID restrictions meant that people from different households couldn’t visit companions. The Ballan Conference was in recess and Margaret, my wife, needed help to deliver assistance coming from Ballarat. I became a probationary member of Ballarat (St Patrick’s) Conference and started going to visit people with Margaret, and also going to Ballarat meetings when allowed.

"I was a bit surprised when I was asked if I would consider taking on the regional president’s role... In the end I agreed to put my hand up, after getting assurances that I would get plenty of support. I was made very welcome by everyone across the Ballarat Region, the North Western Central Council and the crew at Box Hill.

"I am really enjoying my role working with and for many amazingly hardworking and generous people. There is lots to learn and lots to do. Our region has a plan which informs us, but doesn’t restrict us."
