Australians are a generous bunch. Most of us give to charity, even if we’re not wealthy ourselves. We do what we can to support our neighbours.

Yet most of us aren’t aware of one of the most impactful ways to support the causes we care about: including a charity in our will.

More than half of Australians don’t even have a will, which means their savings and assets may not be secured if they unexpectedly pass away. By working with a solicitor to draft up a proper will, you can ensure that your family and loved ones will be taken care of, and that anything left over will go to causes close to your heart.

This is something that Barry Buffier is passionate about. Barry has dedicated over 15 years of his professional life to the NSW public sector, and is a Member of the Order of Australia. He is also an avid supporter of Vinnies, and has included us in his will.

“Including a bequest in my will is just one small way in which I can assist those Australians who are less fortunate and greatly disadvantaged by their circumstances,” Barry says.

“During my career I have visited a number of developing countries both professionally and privately. The extent of the problems they face in terms of income inequity, hunger, poverty, education and homelessness have made a big impression on me,” he says.

“At the same time, through the efforts of organisations such as Vinnies, I have come to realise that these same problems exist for some parts of Australian society even though we are a very wealthy country.”

Like us, Barry believes that everyone deserves a hand up in hard times. He believes that leaving a bequest to Vinnies is a powerful way to ensure that people will always be able to get that support.

One of the many benefits of leaving a bequest is that it provides for the future, without taking away from today. Even if you don’t have much to spare right now, you can still show your generosity and contribute to a better future by remembering Vinnies in your will.

It’s a meaningful way of ensuring your values, generosity and compassion will live on.

We are incredibly grateful to all supporters who intend to leave a gift to Vinnies in their will. If this is something you are considering, we can put you in touch with an honorary solicitor, free of charge. We also appreciate knowing about your intentions so we can be sure to properly thank you, and keep you informed about our good works.
