The Vinnies Reconciliation Movement has been held in schools to promote meaningful reconciliation, cultural understanding, and a shared vision of unity.
To celebrate the world’s longest continuing culture, St Vincent de Paul Society NSW partnered with Amazon for the Vinnies Reconciliation Movement Poster Competition. The competition encouraged young people across the state, aged 3-17, to express what this year’s National Reconciliation Week theme – ‘Bridging Now to Next’ means to them through art.
More than 140 entries were submitted from all over the state with students demonstrating creative flair through paintings, drawings, sculptures and graphic design.
The winner of this year's competition was Quinn Z from Stella Maris Catholic Primary School. Our First Nations Engagement team was on hand to recognise Quinn’s achievement at a school assembly where she was awarded an iPad, Apple Pencil and a Vinnies Prize Pack to nurture her artistic talent.
Quinn’s winning entry was clay sculpture expressing how she feels about ‘Bridging now to next.’
“When I was making it, I thought about a little tree I just planted. It’s like I’m standing with the baby tree now, and I’m walking across a bridge to the future, where the tree is proud and strong.
“I made a river going through the middle to represent the separation between now and next. I also thought about footprints, like the Aboriginal kangaroo ones we see at school.
“They remind me that every day life is a journey.”
Congratulations to Quinn and all our entrants for taking part in the Vinnies Reconciliation Movement.
