Compeer Referrals

Compeer is a social engagement program for people living with the effects of a mental illness (participants). Compeer staff screen, train and supervise volunteers who provide regular one-on-one companionship for a minimum four hours per month for twelve months (or longer by agreement). The companionship can be a valuable adjunct to your client’s recovery by providing social connection, improving their self-confidence and self-esteem. Participants are matched with a volunteer based on age, gender & location.

Compeer recognises the significance of the collaborative relationship with mental health professionals, carers, and family members as well as the rights of the person with the lived experience. Compeer relies on the involvement of the mental health professional throughout the pre-matching and active match period of their client’s involvement with Compeer.

Eligibility criteria

  • 18 years or older and living in the ACT
  • Diagnosed with an identified mental health illness
  • Not acutely unwell or experiencing acute suicidality
  • Not displaying physically or verbally aggressive behaviours
  • Has identified as being socially isolated and is willing to participate in the Compeer program: minimum 4hrs per month for 12 months
  • Can arrange travel to meet the volunteer in a public place
  • Will be seeing a health professional during the time they are participating in the Compeer program.

Compeer referrals

Having considered the eligibility criteria, mental health professionals and their clients are invited to complete the Compeer referral form together. Completed referrals are to be lodged via email to: compeer.cg@vinnies.org.au

Health professionals include general practitioners, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychologists, mental health case managers, mental health support workers, social workers, occupational therapists and mental health nurses.

Following receipt and review of the application form, an intake interview will be scheduled with the client and their health practitioner. The purpose of the interview is to find out a bit more about the client, explain the program’s approach and discuss expectations from the health practitioner and their client as well as providing an opportunity for both to ask any questions.

Wait list/period

Compeer is a volunteer-based program and as such is dependent on finding a suitable volunteer that that best fits your client. Based on compatibility matching, available volunteers, age, interests, level of need, volunteer experience and geographical location, it is difficult to predict how long it will take to find an appropriate volunteer.

However, while on a waiting list, your clients are welcome to come along to Compeer get-togethers.
