6 secrets for great op shopping at Vinnies

We asked the wonderful Cassie - an event stylist from Melbourne-based Firecracker Events - for her top op shopping tips and tricks. Cassie is a pro at creating Instagram-worthy spreads for parties, picnics, weddings, workshops, and beyond.

When hunting through her local op shops, Cassie always keeps six key things in mind...

1. Make a day of it

2. Head to the homewares

Hitting the op shops is always better with friends! The first step is to pick your posse. Next, make a plan of which stores you want to visit. My favourite route? Start at Vinnies Preston, move to Vinnies Brunswick, then on to Vinnies Collingwood.

Not only does Vinnies stock some incredible clothing and accessories, but each store has an amazing array of crockery, cutlery, décor and decorations that can spruce up any room. Op shops are a great place to pick up items for any upcoming dinner parties or birthdays. Get creative and mix-and-match your tableware to bring that unique, original and on-trend vibe.

3. Be open

4. Take your time

If you go in looking for a specific item, it’s almost guaranteed you won’t find it... But keep an open mind and the op shop gods are bound to look down on you with favour and place the most fabulous finds in your path! Go in with zero expectations, and allow yourself to be surprised.

Have a good look around the store and spend time browsing through the racks of clothes or the shelves of homewares. There are always going to be hidden gems that only a patient eye will find.

5. Go often

6. Give back when you can
My friends at Vinnies told me how many donations they receive daily, and the majority of these come direct to store. That means there’s new stock hitting the floor every day - sometimes several times a day! Kudos to the amazing volunteers whose job it is to sort, price and get these donations on the shop floor. It pays to shop often. Any good quality donations received by Vinnies are either given directly to people who are in need in your local community, or they’re sold on to other op-shop-lovers! The profits from all items sold are used to fund programs and provide assistance to Victorians who are doing it tough. As great as op shopping is, remember to donate your preloved goods so they can find a new loving home!
