Hay bales for Millewa

Earlier this year, and as a result of the devastating drought, North Western Central Council President, Chris Pye and his brother John, of Portland Rotary Club, launched the Buy a Bale campaign by driving a single symbolic hay bale from Bessiebelle to the Millewa. Their aim was to raise $50,000 to buy hay for farmers in northern Victoria.

Since then, things have been moving right along. Support for this campaign has been growing especially following a story on Landline which highlighted the pressure of farms folding due to debt should the current season's crops fail.

Chris has advised that the initial load of donated hay was transported by the White family from Allansford and has paved the way for a significant number of truckloads of hay being delivered to farmers in the Millewa region.

A total of 46 farms have now each received 12 rolls of hay which is vital for the survival of breeding stock. The generosity of the White family has continued with a substantial cash donation to this worthy cause.

We thank the White family and all others who have supported the Buy a Bale campaign.

We would also like to make special mention of Mildura Conference member, Denise Knight, who responded to a call for assistance from the farming community and as a result this special work was born.
