During National Homelessness Week (Monday 4 to Sunday 10 August), Passages Peel will join with other local support agencies on Wednesday 6 August and set up stalls along the foreshore to raise awareness of homelessness. Janine and Tim of Passages - Sound Telegraph

Passages Peel coordinator Janine said this was the fourth year the event had taken place which was aimed at giving the local community an opportunity to learn more about homelessness and what local support services are available for those in need of assistance.

“The day provides a great opportunity for people to ask questions and learn firsthand about some of the issues faced by many young people in the Peel region,” Janine said.

“There are still too many young people doing it tough in the Mandurah region and we need to work together to provide the help and support that they need.”

“In the three months from April to June this year, Passages Peel helped 195 young people, the youngest only 12 years old.

“All up we had 598 young people access our service in that time, 48 of them new to the Service,” said Janine.

“As well as providing information we will also have some beautifully made patchwork blankets, beanies and scarves to give away to those people sleeping rough, thanks to one of our volunteer knitting groups.”

“Any other items people wish to provide will also be warmly received, including clothing, bedding and food.

“We hope the Mandurah community will come down and  show their support on the day and learn about the issue of homelessness and what can be done to help those in need,” Janine said.

Other agencies taking part on the day include the City of Mandurah, GP Down South (Medical), Calvary Youth Services, The Peel Community Kitchen, Reach Out Drop Inn, Foodbank, West Aus Crisis, Billy Dower Youth Services, Peel Youth Service and Centrelink.
