After 26 years in the Royal Australian Navy working out of nearly every State in Australia, taking on the role of Vinnies’ Shop Manager in Kalgoorlie is a “completely different challenge” for Robyn Steenbach.

As a Naval Police Coxswain, Robyn is used to being on the move, but swapped the deep blue for the red dirt, content to settle down and take things a bit slower.

“I’ve had a great career but I was ready for a new challenge,” Robyn said.

“I’ve never worked in a shop before now so this is all incredibly new and different for me.”

With her husband  (they met while working together in the Navy) currently working a 15 month stint in Antarctica, Robyn likes keeping busy in the Shop but  says what she enjoys most is meeting new people.

“Not only do I work with a great group of volunteers but I also get to meet so many new and interesting people who come into the store, from locals to holiday makers just passing through.”

Robyn has only been in the role for a few weeks but has already overseen some important and welcome changes.

“We have extended our opening hours and are now open on Saturday mornings from 9 am-1pm which we hope will be more convenient for those people who work during the week,” Robyn said.

With the extended shop hours, Robyn is also looking to recruit more volunteers to help out in the store.

Volunteers at Vinnies are trained in all areas of working in a retail environment including register operation, customer service, sorting and pricing, donations and merchandising.

Anyone interested in volunteering at Vinnies Kalgoorlie Shop can contact Robyn on 9091 8010.
