It is now less than two weeks until over 100 of Western Australia’s most prominent business and community leaders will give up the comfort of their warm beds and sleep under the stars for the annual Vinnies CEO Sleepout.

The CEO Sleepout event, which will be held in all capital cities on Thursday 19 June, calls on CEOs to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness while raising funds for Vinnies homeless services.

This is the 5th CEO sleepout event and St Vincent de Paul Society CEO (WA) Mark Fitzpatrick thanks all WA’s business elite who have signed up to show their support in the fight against homelessness.

“At this time of year, it’s important to remember the thousands of West Australians who sleep rough each night,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.
“Currently 10,000 people are experiencing homelessness in WA, and despite the stereotypes, the reality is that the majority of people experiencing homelessness are under the age of 35 - people in the prime of their life who have become trapped in a cycle of disadvantage,” he said.

Today there are 105,237 people experiencing homelessness every night across Australia; this represents an 8% increase since the 2006 Census.

“Last year’s record of 108 participants managed to raise an incredible $1.1million for homelessness in WA and we are keen to improve on that this year,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.

CEOs will get a glimpse of the cold, harsh reality faced by so many Australians on a nightly basis as they sleep rough on the longest night of the year.

Last year’s top fundraiser Dale Alcock, Managing Director of ABN Group has signed on to take part again this year, as well as Crown Perth’s Barry Felstead,  Lotterywest’s Jan Stewart, first timer David Buckingham of iinet and many more.

“The CEO Sleepout is the biggest source of funding support for Vinnies homeless services in Northbridge and Mandurah. The event’s success is vital to the Society’s work in homelessness and the community’s awareness of the issue of homelessness in WA and across Australia,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.
