Vinnies Queensland launched the Cyclone Marcia Recovery Appeal today in conjunction with funds donated by the Queensland Government to assist victims of the recent disaster.

State President John Forrest said that the funding of $250,000 announced by Premier Annastacia Palaszcsuk would be used to help people on the ground in affected areas.

"These funds and the generous donations of those in the wider Queensland who want to help will help us provide the items those affected need.

"Already families devastated by Cyclone Marcia are turning to our centre for support during their time of hardship.

"We need to be there to help people rebuild their lives, but we can only do that with the financial support of the public.

"Every dollar donated goes directly to the victims of the disaster for basic needs through to rebuilding their lives when the crisis is over," he said.

Mr Forrest said the Society was a permanent local presence throughout Queensland providing a hand up to victims who had lost everything.

"We are committed to assisting in the long-term recovery of people affected by the disaster, we are on the ground and know our communities," he said.

"Vinnies will still be there offering assistance and friendship: helping people recover their lives long after the initial crisis period is over."

During the 2011 flood disaster Vinnies provided over $31m in direct financial assistance.
