Vinnies together with Mr Rob Molhoek MP and Councillor Dawn Critchlow today launched the second Gold Coast Corporate and Community Sleepout to raise $150,000 towards building a new Homeless Support Centre.
Participants can sign up at www.communitysleepout.org.au to raise the much needed funds and experience sleeping rough at the event to be held on Thursday 9 July.
Vinnies Corporate and Community Sleepout Chairman Jim Donaldson said that in the Gold Coast region more than 4,000 people faced homelessness or were at risk of homelessness that needed help.
"Every week we receive calls from people facing homelessness, due to a range of reasons and they need our help, which makes the funds raised even more important for building the centre," he said.
"We are scouting for a location so we can provide essential services to people facing homelessness and assist them to transition into independent living.
"Thank you to our ambassadors here today and the team at HOT Tomato who will be supporting the event again.
"Luke Bradnam was our top fundraiser last year and the rest of the participants weren’t far behind his tally.
"We were blown away by the dedication of the participants and their generous donors as the funds mean we can make real change to breaking the vicious cycle of homelessness."
You can sign up by yourself, with a team or donate online at www.communitysleepout.org.au.
"Each participant will have the chance to experience a night of homelessness with only a piece of cardboard to sleep on, a sleeping bag and simple meals," Mr Donaldson said.
Every night there are almost 20,000 people facing homelessness in Queensland, with 27 per cent being children.
Registrations and donations can be made online at www.communitysleepout.org.au
The 2015 Vinnies Corporate and Community Sleepout will be held on Thursday 9 July. The aim for the event is not only to raise funds, but to raise awareness of homelessness. The discomfort of sleeping on the streets is a fragment of the larger reality we hope to impart upon influential leaders of our community. To be part of this year’s Corporate and Community Sleepout, business leaders can register online at
www.communitysleepout.org.au to participate and collect online donations. The Vinnies Community Sleepout is to raise funds for supporting the homeless in our local community.
