Vinnies CEO Sleepout Sets Record Total

The 2019 Vinnies CEO Sleepout has set a record total over $7.9 million, providing a valuable boost to services assisting people experiencing homelessness.

In its 14th year the CEO Sleepout raised $7,987,040 nationwide to bring the overall total since 2006 to just under $60 million.

Across New South Wales 465 CEOs and business leaders raised over $2.48 million at events held on 20 June in Sydney ($2,154,884), Newcastle ($185,925) and Wollongong ($141,523).

Taking part in the event for the third time, Vinnies NSW CEO Jack de Groot expressed delight at the record support which will ensure continued support for people experiencing homelessness through accommodation, food, healthcare, education and other relief.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity shown by everyone who took part and donated to this year’s event,” Mr de Groot said.

“The number of people seeking our help continues to grow as a result of increasing social and financial pressures, so the funds raised will allow us to give a hand up to those in need.”

In February this year, Vinnies NSW – in partnership with a number of other charities, the City of Sydney and the NSW Government – signed an agreement stating that they will would work together to halve the number of people sleeping rough across NSW by 2025.

“The money raised from the CEO Sleepout will make a profound difference to people doing it tough, but there needs to be more work done by all levels of government and the business world to address the underlying factors that result in homelessness”, Mr de Groot said.

Figures from the most recent 2016 Census revealed that on any given night, in excess of 116,000 people nationwide have no permanent home. In NSW the number of people experiencing homelessness increased by 37% from 2011-2016 to a total of 37,715.
