Local Legend Recognised For Remarkable Efforts
Wednesday 20 May 2020
Last week the Today Show’s Sarah Stewart surprised one of our volunteers, Tony Cranney, who had been nominated as an Aussie Hero. Recognised for his remarkable efforts in the local community, we could not be more proud to see Tony awarded for his ongoing dedication to helping others.
Tony has touched many hearts in his 30 years as a volunteer with Vinnies, delivering food, collecting donations, and arranging for appliances to be delivered to people in need. “If someone is in need of white goods, he’ll even go to the extent of purchasing it himself and delivering it” Explains Katrina, a Vinnies staff member who’s seen Tony’s dedication in action for many years.
Recently giving the biggest gift of all, last year Tony underwent surgery to donate an organ to his best friend. Always giving, Tony was back on the ground helping us raise funds for those impacted by bushfires within 3 weeks of the surgery.

Everyone who knows Tony was thrilled to hear of this acknowledgement of Tony’s unwavering support, not only for those he is closest too, but to every person that he meets. When Sarah told Tony that he’d won $10,000 generously given by Suncorp, he didn’t hesitate in telling them he was donating the money to Vinnies. “There’s that many people at the moment requesting help… We do our normal stuff which is keeping food on the table and the lights on, but there’s so many more requests now and they’re much larger requests.” He explained, “It will all go to Vinnies”
Thank you to The Today Show & Suncorp for showing some love to one of the most committed members of the community. We are so grateful for Tony’s donation and ongoing support, and are proud to have an Aussie Hero on our team.
