All Inclusive Star Wars: The Last Jedi Screening
The newest release in the Star Wars blockbuster film series, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, will screen with open captions this Sunday, 17 December at The Ritz cinema in Randwick and the GU Film House in Cronulla.
Both theatres’ have worked with Vinnies Ability Links and members of the Deaf community to make the cinema experience more inclusive and accessible.
Michael Doran, an Ability Linker with St Vincent de Paul Society NSW, explained, ‘Open captioning of movies supports people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and people acquiring English as an additional language. It also benefits children learning to read.’
‘GU Film House Cronulla and The Ritz now regularly host open captioned screenings as well as sensory screenings. These sessions provide a way in which all members of the community can participate in the fun experience of simply enjoying the cinema,’ said Michael.
‘There’s no reason why certain members of our community should miss out on this part of mainstream culture,’ he said.
Ability Links is a free NSW State Government initiative desgined to promote inclusivity in the community. This program serves two purposes - to enable people with disabilities, their families and carers to live the life they want as valued members of their community, and to link with businesses and organisations to make community spaces more physically and socially accessible.
