Sports CEOs put aside rivalries for charity

This Thursday 6 April, CEOs from many of Australia’s favourite sporting codes will be gathering at the hallowed grounds of the SCG to promote the Vinnies CEO Sleepout.

The Vinnies CEO Sleepout is a chance for CEOs to get a glimpse of the struggles that many people experiencing homelessness go through. CEOs spend the night sleeping in the cold, winter weather, learning about the support services Vinnies offers and hearing first hand from people who have experienced difficulties that led to homelessness.

Todd Greenberg from the NRL, Kelle Storey from the Sydney Swans, David Matthews from Greater Western Sydney Giants, Sam Graham from AFL NSW, and Andrew Jones from Cricket NSW will be uniting to launch the 2017 Vinnies CEO Sleepout on Thursday thanks to the SCG Trust for bringing them together.

Jack de Groot, CEO St Vincent de Paul Society NSW said: “It’s great to see these major codes setting aside their differences and getting on with the business of supporting those in need and raising significant funds for our services.”

“Our CEO Sleepout is in its 12th year now and building on the successes of previous years, we’ve set our fundraising target at $2.3 million. The vital funds will be used to support our frontline services including the Mathew Talbot Hostel in Woolloomooloo.”

“The theme this year is Homelessness Doesn’t Have a Postcode because at Vinnies we know first-hand that no matter what suburb or town you live in, there will be people experiencing homelessness or at risk.”

Todd Greenberg, NRL CEO is looking forward to the experience “Like all the CEOs coming along to this year’s Sleepout, we want to be able to give back to those in need. Homelessness is a growing issue and I know how vital Vinnies is for those experiencing hard times. It doesn’t matter what sport you follow, homelessness could affect anyone. Homelessness doesn’t have a postcode or a sporting code.”

“Could there be a more perfect venue for all these passionate sporting CEOs to gather and learn more about homelessness for this year’s CEO Sleepout than the SCG?”

Jamie Barkley, SCG Trust CEO is delighted to host the Vinnies CEO Sleepout at the SCG. “The SCG is affiliated with a number of charities but this could be our biggest event yet.

“Sport unites Australians from all walks of life and this is a brilliant opportunity to put homelessness in the spotlight. It’s something that largely goes unnoticed in society and the Trust is proud to help raise awareness and much needed funds for the cause.”
