Creative Space for inclusive arts

Creative Space, Bowral’s new inclusive arts project, will be opening its doors to the public on Thursday 24 August at  Kazcare, 15-17 Kirkham Road, Bowral. In the lead up to the opening, they are encouraging people to enter in the art competition.

April Holt, a Linker with Ability Links said Creative Space welcomed artists of all abilities to come together to learn new skills, develop existing skills, as well access mentoring and peer skill exchange.

“Ability Links is a free service promoting inclusivity in the community. Linkers work in two ways; by supporting people with disabilities, their families and carers to live the life they want, as valued members of their community, and by linking with businesses and organisations to make community spaces physically and socially accessible,” said April.

“Through conversations with our participants and community members we realised there is a need for an art space where people can get together and practice and grow their creative skills.

“We formed a group of service providers, artists and community members and secured a room at Kazcare Bowral. To make it easier for people to attend, we lobbied for the bus stop outside Kazcare to be used once more.

“To celebrate the opening of Creative Space, we are inviting the public to visit an exhibition of works that have been entered into our art competition. We have two prizes, both worth $500, one for a logo design for Creative Space and the other for an artwork that speaks to the theme of inclusion, ‘Us – Them – We’. We will also be promoting opportunities for local creative enterprises as well as accredited TAFENSW arts courses and training.

Creative Space will be open from 10am to 4pm, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, offering free two-day informal 2D and 3D studio time. On the third day there will be free TAFENSW arts courses, alternating with artist-led workshops (for small fee).

Ability Links is a NSW State Government initiative that is being operated by St Vincent de Paul Society NSW in partnership with Settlement Services International across Sydney Metro South.
