Fitzroy Soup Van

Fitzroy Soup Van

The Fitzroy Soup Van commenced operation on 26 June 1975, instigated by a small number of people who wanted to provide soup, sandwiches and community to people experiencing homelessness in the city. With considerable assistance from St Vincent de Paul Society and the Catholic parish network the small group of volunteers acquired a van and permission to operate out of Ozanam House. Since then, the Fitzroy Soup Van Operation has grown into a trusted and reliable service for a daily meal and social connection for those experiencing homelessness and disadvantage across the inner city.

This soup van offers food, social connection, and referral pathways out of homelessness and poverty, to people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness and disadvantage.

Last year our 589 volunteers provided 88,503 meals.

Based at a kitchen in North Melbourne and operating seven night per week, this soup van operation has two distinct runs. One run provides support at five public street stops across Fitzroy and the CBD. The other run provides support at boarding/rooming houses and social housing in North Melbourne, Fitzroy and the CBD.
