Compeer in Sunshine Coast Queensland

What is Compeer?
Compeer is an internationally recognised and awarded companionship program for people living with mental illness. Volunteers are carefully matched with a companion who is receiving mental health treatment and they meet each week to share in simple acts of friendship.

Who can access Compeer?
Adult individuals who have a primary mental health diagnosis, are receiving regular mental health treatment, and are seeking companionship can be referred to Compeer. Referrals can be made by a mental health professional involved in ongoing treatment and recovery (psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, case manager, doctor, mental health nurse, occupational therapist, counsellor or mental health care worker).

Where is Compeer located?
Compeer is located on the Sunshine Coast.

What are the benefits of accessing Compeer?
Compeer provides social inclusion and engagement for people isolated by their experience of mental illness. Increased social support can assist in relapse prevention and recovery. Compeer helps break down the lack of understanding of mental illness in the community and creates awareness that people experiencing mental illness have the same hopes for meaningful relationships and support as everyone else.

Can I volunteer for Compeer?
Yes, Volunteers come from all backgrounds, nationalities and religions (or no religious affiliation). They are emotionally mature and stable adult men and women who are friendly, accepting and are able to commit for one year or more. All volunteers must successfully complete an interview, police and referee checks and training.
