What is the Brekky Van?
Brekky Van is a homeless service which provides a cooked breakfast, cereal and hot drinks, each Sunday morning and is a part of the Sydney Vinnies Van Services. It is dedicated to helping people experiencing homelessness in inner Sydney. Brekky Van aspires to provide those living rough, in supported accommodation, or in social or financial hardship with a sense of community and companionship, compassion, genuine care and support.
Who can access the service?
Brekky Van is open to anyone who comes to us. We provide a non-judgmental service and will not refuse assistance to anyone who approaches. We especially encourage people who are living on the streets or in overcrowded or insecure accommodation to access the service. The service is provided free of charge to all we assist.
Where is the service located?
Brekky Van operates from Prince Alfred Park in Surry Hills, near the intersection of Chalmers Street and Cleveland Street, every Sunday from 9am until 11am.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Brekky Van has been suspended till further notice.
What are the benefits of this service?
We offer a reliable and consistent service that provides a ‘hand up’ to those in need. Gathering for a communal cooked breakfast has a lovely social and supportive feel, building acceptance and openness and addressing the barriers of loneliness and isolation that many living on the fringe of society suffer. Volunteers are able to show the people we assist that we do care, creating a genuine community of friends from all walks of life.
Can I volunteer for Brekky Van?
We are very fortunate in that we have many more volunteers than we have regular vacancies and at this stage Brekky Van is currently at capacity for volunteers assisting on the weekend.
