What is the Como Social & Leisure Centre?

The Como Social & Leisure Centre provides day programs and support for people living with mental health issues and their carers in a safe, inviting and friendly atmosphere.  The service provides opportunities for people to socialise participate in recreational activities and access other local community resources thereby aiding in the prevention of isolation and loneliness that is often experienced by those living with mental health issues. Regular attendance by participants has enabled many lasting peer friendships to form and has also facilitated the development of strong support networks with staff, volunteers and the local community.

The Como Social and Leisure Centre is an accredited service under the NDIS.

Who can access the Como Social & Leisure Centre?

The Como Social & Leisure Centre day programs can be accessed by people over 18 years of age living in the Sutherland Shire who have a diagnosed mental illness.  A range of programs are also available for residents of the Sutherland Shire who are caring for someone with a mental illness.

Where is the Como Social & Leisure Centre located?

The Centre is located at 6-8 Taplan Street, Como NSW 2226 in the former St Peter’s Church.

What are the benefits of accessing this service?

If you are experiencing mental health issues you will be supported to reengage with your local community and develop meaningful friendships by participating in social and recreational activities.  You will also have the opportunity to have active input into the planning of the centre activities and its outings.  As a part of our service, we also provide a substantial, nutritious midday meal.

If you are a carer for someone who has a mental illness we will provide you with the support you need to maintain your often demanding role, as well as time and opportunities for you to further engage in your own social and lifestyle activities. 

Can I volunteer for the Como Social & Leisure Centre?

We welcome volunteers to assist us with the running of Como Social and Leisure Centre.  Our regular volunteers transport people to and from the Centre in our vehicles, assist to prepare the midday meal, and offer friendship to those attending the service. 

We also have volunteers who contribute their particular skills when they have time available; for example arts and craft, music, and yoga just to name a few activities.  To become a volunteer you will need to be at least 18 years of age.
